Maharashtra

Maharashtra is an Indian state which is located in the western peninsular region of the county and also occupies a significant portion of the Deccan plateau. Maharashtra came into existence on May 1, 1960, by splitting the bilingual Bombay state into majority Maratha-speaking Maharashtra and Gujarati-speaking Gujarat. Covering an area of 3,07,713 sq. Km., Maharashtra is the second most populous state as well as the third-largest state in the country. The state is bordered by the Arabian Sea in the west, Karnataka and Goa in the south, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh in the north and Telangana and Chhattisgarh in the east. It is also bordered by the Indian union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.

The state’s capital is Mumbai which is also the most populous urban area in India. Marathi is the official and widely spoken language in Maharashtra whereas Krishna and Godavari are the two major rivers of the state.

Maharashtra is considered the most industrialized state as it contributes 25 percent of the country's industrial output.

Some of the popular traditional dishes of the state include ‘puran poli’, ‘ukdiche modak’, ‘thalipeeth’ and ‘batatavada.’

Traditional outfit for Marathi women is navari saree or nine-yard lugade along with Kolhapuri saaj (a type of necklace) whereas a Gandhi cap is a popular headgear for men in Maharashtra. Bharuds, Powada and Gondhals represent the vibrant folk of the state. Also, Lavani and Koli dance are popular dance forms that come from the state.
