Maharashtra is an Indian state which is located in the western peninsular region of the county and also occupies a significant portion of the Deccan plateau. Maharashtra came into existence on May 1, 1960, by splitting the bilingual Bombay state into majority Maratha-speaking Maharashtra and Gujarati-speaking Gujarat. Covering an area of 3,07,713 sq. Km., Maharashtra is the second most populous state as well as the third-largest state in the country. The state is bordered by the Arabian Sea in the west, Karnataka and Goa in the south, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh in the north and Telangana and Chhattisgarh in the east. The state’s capital is Mumbai which is also the most populous urban area in India. Marathi is the official and widely spoken language in Maharashtra whereas Krishna and Godavari are the two major rivers of the state.
