Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma is an Indian international cricketer and the captain of India's ODI and Test teams. He also led India's T20 team and retired from the format after guiding India to victory in the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Rohit plays domestic cricket for Mumbai and represents the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Renowned as one of the world’s finest opening batsmen, he is a key player for Team India at the top of the order.

Born on April 30, 1987, in Nagpur, Maharashtra, Rohit Gurunath Sharma comes from a humble background. His father, Gurunath Sharma, worked in a transport company, while his mother, Purnima Sharma, hails from Visakhapatnam.

Rohit made his ODI debut in 2007 against Ireland in Belfast and his T20 International debut during the 2007 ICC World T20 against England in Durban. He scored his first ODI century on May 28, 2010, against Zimbabwe. Rohit made his Test debut in 2013 and scored a century in his very first match. He later achieved the remarkable feat of scoring centuries in both innings of a Test match against South Africa in 2019, becoming the sixth Indian to accomplish this.

He holds the world record for the highest individual score in ODIs – a staggering 264 runs. Rohit also set a record by scoring five centuries in the 2019 Cricket World Cup, the most by any player in a single tournament. Additionally, he holds the record for the most runs from boundaries (186) and the most fours (33) in an ODI innings. He is the only batsman in the world to have scored three double centuries in ODIs. As a captain, Rohit is the most successful in IPL history, having led the Mumbai Indians to five titles. It was the Mumbai Indians franchise that famously nicknamed him the "Hitman."

Rohit was honoured with the Arjuna Award in 2015. In 2020, he received the prestigious Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. He was also named the ICC ODI Player of the Year in 2019.

Rohit married Ritika Sajdeh in December 2015. The couple welcomed their daughter in December 2018 and a son in November 2024.
