Syria

Syria, officially the Syrian Arab Republic, is a country in the Middle East, bordered by Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east, Jordan to the south, and Lebanon and Israel to the west. Its western edge is marked by the Mediterranean Sea. The capital, Damascus, is one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, underscoring Syria’s rich historical and cultural heritage.

The country has been a crossroads of civilizations, influenced by Mesopotamian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic cultures. Modern Syria gained independence from French mandate rule in 1946. Its post-independence history has been shaped by periods of instability, authoritarian rule, and regional tensions.

Since 2011, Syria has been engulfed in a devastating civil war following protests during the Arab Spring. The conflict has drawn in numerous domestic and international actors, including the Assad government, opposition forces, extremist groups, and global powers such as the United States, Russia, and Iran. The war has led to immense human suffering, with hundreds of thousands killed, millions displaced, and widespread destruction of infrastructure.
